Kun on käynyt ulkona ihastelemassa katolta lentävää lunta ja jäniksen jälkiä tuoreessa hangessa, on aika lämmittää leivinuuni ja paistaa perinteiset joulunpyhien pizzat.

When you've been outdoors admiring the snow blown off the rooftops and seen the footprints of a rabbit on the fresh snow it's time to heat up the oven and bake the traditional holiday pizzas.

Matkalla maalle -- On the Way to the Countryside

Matkustimme pyhien viettoon maalle. Ihana rauha odotti perillä.

We drove to the countryside for the holidays. Peaceful frosty days welcomed us.

Lisää lunta, osa 2 -- More Snow, Vol. 2

Lisää lunta! Sekä sisällä että ulkona. Hedelmäpussit on käyneet kotona jo niin vähiin, että piti töissä tonkia kaappeja. Löytyihän niitä sen verran, mitä ehti tänä iltana virkkaamaan.

More snow!! Both inside and outside of the house! I'm running out of fruit bags at home so today I had to search for more at work - and found a few. Just enough to use them all up tonight.

Pakkasenpuremia -- Frostbites

Pakkassää on kaunis. Taivas on upean värinen ja luonto on hiljaa. Tykkään näistä kylmistä päivistä. Viime päivät onkin ollut pakkasta parhaimmillaan -25°C. Aamupäivällä töihin päästyäni palasin takaisin ulos ottamaan tämän kuvan.

Freezing cold days are beautiful. The sky gets a special colour and the nature is still. I like these cold days. Over the past few days it's been as cold as -25°C. In the morning, after I had arrived to work I had to go back out to take this picture.

Lisää lunta -- More Snow

Kohta loppuu vähäiset muovikassivarastot näiden kokeilujen johdosta..

Tällä kertaa leikkasin lyhyitä suikaleita paksummasta, valkoisesta muovikassista, kokosin niistä keon ja silitin. Lisäsin suikaleita, silitin, lisäsin, silitin.. kunnes olin tyytyväinen. Tässä tulos:

I'm running out of plastic bags soon with these trials..

This time I just cut out little slices of a bit thicker white plastic bag, piled them up, ironed, added more layers until I was happy with the outcome.

 And here's what I got:

Miten muovipussista tuli lumihiutale?

How a plastic bag turned into a snowflake?

1. Otetaan käytetty hedelmäpussi ja sakset. Leikataan pohja pois ja suikaloidaan n. sentin levysiksi renkuloiksi. Liitetään renkulat toisiinsa, jolloin muodostuu kaksinkertainen "lanka".

Take a used plastic bag (fruit bag) and scissors. Cut the bottom of the bag off. Cut the bag in loops that are about 1 cm wide. Join the loops together to for a double "yarn".

2. Virkataan kiva kuvio.

Crochet a nice pattern.

3.  Silitetään leivinpaperin välissä. Jäähtyessään lumihiutale kovettuu.

Iron between to pieces of baking paper. When it cools off it'll harden.

4. Lumihiutale on valmis!
The snowflake is ready to be hung as a decoration!

Ekat joululahjat -- First Christmas Prezzies

Kukin Naakka saa pikkujoululahjaksi oman naakka-heijastimen.

Materiaalit: Heijastinnauhaa, punaista vinonauhaa, pala vihreästä pöytäliinasta ja hakaneula.

Each Jackdaw will get their own Jackdaw reflector as a present at our pre-Christmas party.

Materials: Reflective band, red bias tape, a piece of green table cloth and a safety pin.

Aika -- Time

Afrikkalaiset sanovat, että meillä länsimaisilla ihmisillä on kellot, mutta heillä on aika.

Allekirjoitan tämän täysin.

Haluaisin oppia heidän tavastaan ymmärtää asia niin, että aikaa tulee koko ajan lisää. Se ei voi loppua kesken.

Haluan oppia elämään vielä enemmän tässä hetkessä. En mennessä enkä tulevassa, vaan tässä ja nyt. Koska se on ainoa asia, joka meillä on. Tämä hetki.

Africans say that we Western people have clocks but they have the time.
I totally agree.
I wish that I would learn more about the African way of thinking. That it's impossible to run out of time because we get more time all the time.
I want to learn to live in the present. Not in the past nor in the future, but cherish each moment, because that's the only thing we have. This moment.

Vilna -- Vilnius

Tein äkkipäätöksen ja lähdin käymään Vilnassa.

Syksyinen Vilna on värikäs, ei pelkästään kauniiden puiden vuoksi.

I made a sudden decision to go to Vilnius. It was a colorful city, and not just because of the autumn colors of the trees.

Užupisin kaupunginosaan vievän sillan kaiteessa on rakkauden lukkoja. Vastavihityt parit kaiverruttavat lukkoon nimensä, kiinnittävät lukon sillankaiteeseen ja heittävät avaimen jokeen.

The bridge leading to the suburb of  Užupis is full of love padlocks of newlyweds. The couple will have their names engraved on the padlock, lock it up on the rail of the bridge and throw the key down into the river.

Toinen lumisade -- The Second Snowfall

Tuntui hyvältä ajatukselta laittaa uudet kengät jalkaan aamulla.

Illalla kotiin tullessa se ei tuntunutkaan enää niin hyvältä. Mutta olipas ihanan valoisaa, kun maa oli valkoinen.

It felt like a good idea to wear the new shoes to work this morning.

But when I came home in the evening it didn't feel so good anymore. But it was nice and bright when the ground had turned white.

Toisten hyväksi -- For the Sake of Others

Tänään oli hyvä päivä.

Tänään oli toisten hyväksi -päivä.

Illalla syötiin makkaraa ja vohvelia ja toimittiin muutenkin kolumbialaisten kanssasisarien ja -veljien hyväksi.

Kotimatkalla kävin vielä postissa noutamassa tämän paketin.

Today was a good day.

Today was a day for the sake of others.

We had sausages and waffles and workshops to raise money for our fellow sisters and brothers in Colombia.

On the way home I picked this package up from the post office:
