Stop!

After a busy week full of scheduled work and hobbies I used wisely the only day off I had last week. Packed my bags hurriedly, picked up my friend and off we went. That was the end of schedules and rushing from one place to another.

All we had

was

time.

And starry night
- the amount of stars is unbelievable when there's no light pollution!

And great food
- on wood heated stove and on campfire.

There was nothing special to do
- which made it special.

Slow down, people! Make an effort to find even just a few hours to go out to the shore or to the forest or what ever you have near your home. And decide to do nothing.
That's my free advice for you (and for me) this week.

Days of yore

Afternoon at an open-air museum.
Back in the day, life was simpler in many ways. The touch of a human hand is seen everywhere: on the timber of the walls, on the wooden dishes on the table.
I'm not saying that we should go back to those days, nor that it was an easy life, but it's a refreshing breeze from the past. The buildings whisper about slowing down in life and living a communal life.
Who wouldn't want that?

Toukokuu -- May

Juhlakausi on kiireisimmillään juuri nyt. Toukokuu on sukumme synttärikuukausi.

It's the peak of the party season. May is full of birthdays in our family. It's time to wear the party dresses and take out the special table wear, forget about dieting (not that I would be on one) and enjoy being with family and friends.
The weather in May (too) is very unpredictable, but this time it looks like the biggest party will be held enjoying the +25°C weather! Amazing. And it was only yesterday that there was still the last traces of snow in my back yard.

Lähetys Kambodzhasta -- Mail from Cambodia

Over a year ago I bought myself a recycled bag from Cambodia. Today I received a bigger batch of Bloom Bags! These bags are made out of used fish feed bags. It's such a cool idea and what really impressed me on my visit there was the whole concept behind it. You can read all about it following the link above. And no, I'm not selling these. All the bags already have an owner.

Aika -- Time

Africans say that we Western people have clocks but they have the time.
I totally agree.
I wish that I would learn more about the African way of thinking. That it's impossible to run out of time because we get more time all the time.
I want to learn to live in the present. Not in the past nor in the future, but cherish each moment, because that's the only thing we have. This moment.

Toisten hyväksi -- For the Sake of Others

Tänään oli hyvä päivä.
Tänään oli toisten hyväksi -päivä.
Illalla syötiin makkaraa ja vohvelia ja toimittiin muutenkin kolumbialaisten kanssasisarien ja -veljien hyväksi.
Kotimatkalla kävin vielä postissa noutamassa tämän paketin.

Today was a good day.
Today was a day for the sake of others.
We had sausages and waffles and workshops to raise money for our fellow sisters and brothers in Colombia.
On the way home I picked this package up from the post office:

Jokaisesta ostetusta parista TOMS lahjoittaa parin kenkiä niitä tarvitsevalle lapselle.
For every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of shoes to a child in need.

Reilu penaali -- A Fair Pencil Case

Ystäväni on opettaja, reilu sellainen.
My friend is a teacher - a fair teacher, I must add. Somehow her pencil case got lost past semester. She's been working really hard this year and this week she's been giving marks for the students as it is the end of the school year. She was worried that the students weren't going to be happy with the marks and was sad about losing her pencil case, which was a special one from a time spent overseas. So what better gift to sew her than a fair trade pencil case to remind her of her virtue. Sometimes it sucks being fair. So here's to you, C, and all the teachers in the world who think that their students need to get the mark they deserve based on their learning and not on their opinion about their teacher! Thanks for doing what you do!

Materiaalit: Reilun kaupan kahvipussi, käytetty vetoketju, vinonauha.
Materials: Fair Trade coffee bag, old, used zipper, bias tape.

Keltaista, sinistä ja punaista -- Yellow, blue and red

Sydämeni jäi tänne.
This is where I left a piece of my heart.

But because the reality isn't always as pretty as flowers, I challence you to do something about it. (The link above is only in Finnish, but I'm sure you can find some way to help others.)
